Packaging register in the EU

Besides the German LUCID register, the following countries operate similar waste registers. Online retailers that ship to these countries may have obligations to register:

  1. Poland
  2. Lithuania
  3. Greece
  4. Slovakia
  5. Great Britain

We have summarized the most important information regarding waste registers abroad in our blog article.

The French packaging law

France is a prominent example for a strict packaging law in Europe. Similarly to Germany, any company that sells to consumers in France has legal obligations for recycling – even when shipping only 1 package a year. Furthermore, France also has its own recycling symbol that must be printed on certain products and recyclable packaging.

There are packaging laws in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden, i.e. in all EU member states. These packaging laws are all based on the EU packaging waste directive.

However, there are similar laws in some non-EU countries. For instance there is a local packaging law in the UK and Norway. Switzerland also has enacted legal obligations for the recycling of certain types of packaging waste.
