EPR compliance in Europe: why a structured solution is essential

The demands placed on the circular economy are constantly increasing. Since the concept was first developed in the 1990s, EPR has evolved into a complex web of national laws and diverse systems. Those who stay on top of these developments will secure long-term access to the European market.

1.

The patchwork of national regulations

Each EU country implements EPR differently. Different reporting deadlines, different classifications, and national portals in local languages make consistent management a challenge. Without a clear system, mistakes can happen quickly.

2.

A dynamic legal environment

Rules such as the PPWR and new requirements for textiles, furniture, or single use plastics show that regulatory frameworks are constantly evolving. A business that is compliant today may already face new obligations tomorrow. Ongoing monitoring is therefore not optional. It is essential.

3.

The role of online marketplaces

Marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, or Zalando are legally required to closely verify the compliance status of their sellers. Missing proof of compliance often leads to selling restrictions today. EPR compliance is therefore a basic requirement for your visibility and your revenue.

EPR Compliance Service for all relevant waste streams

Shipping packaging, product packaging, filler material, pallets, cartons, and more. EPR obligations apply to many different types of packaging. Across the EU, previous country specific directives will be replaced by the PPWR, a uniform packaging regulation starting in August 2026. The goal is a circular economy: producers and retailers share recycling costs and take responsibility for the full life cycle of their products.

With ecosistant, you can address your packaging EPR obligations in all relevant countries in a transparent, digital, and simple way. That keeps your focus on growing your store, not on bureaucracy.

EPR Compliance

Waste electrical and electronic equipment falls into the WEEE category. This includes smartphones, laptops, household appliances, lamps, and small devices, among other products. The WEEE Directive has applied across the EU since 2012. Producers are required to take responsibility for the collection and recycling of electronic waste in order to protect the environment and conserve resources.

With ecosistant, you can keep your WEEE obligations in Europe under control, from registration to ongoing reporting.

EPR Compliance

Portable batteries such as AA and AAA, industrial batteries, vehicle batteries, rechargeable batteries in tools and more have been covered by the EU Battery Directive since 2006, and by the Battery Regulation since 2023. Producers remain responsible for the proper collection and recovery of waste batteries. Collection targets for portable waste batteries are being increased step by step.

ecosistant manages your battery EPR obligations across Europe in a clear and reliable way.

EPR Compliance

Clothing, shoes, bed linen, bags and more: The EU Waste Framework Directive (2025/1892) requires textile EPR in all EU countries from 2028 onward. In some countries, these rules already apply. The goal is to slow fast fashion, reduce textile waste and promote recycling through eco modulated fees based on sustainability criteria.

With ecosistant, you are well prepared for the new textile EPR obligations.

EPR Compliance

A large share of furniture waste still ends up in landfills or incineration, even though the materials used are often recyclable. That is why some EU countries are already implementing EPR systems for furniture, and the trend is growing. Affected products include all types of furniture and, in some cases, mattresses and decorative textiles.

We help you tackle your furniture EPR obligations in a legally compliant manner.
EPR Compliance

Single use plastics, or SUP, are products made from plastic or composite materials that are typically used only once. Single use plastic products subject to EPR under EU Directive 2019/904 include disposable cutlery and plates, straws, food containers, lightweight plastic carrier bags, balloons, and wet wipes. Under national rules, producers are made responsible for the full life cycle of these products.

With our Premium Service, ecosistant takes care of your EPR obligations related to single use plastics. This reduces both risk and effort.

EPR Compliance

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) is constantly evolving, and new waste streams may be added at any time through national or EU wide legislation. In France, for example, EPR obligations already apply to toys and sporting goods.

With our Premium Service, you are covered for all relevant waste streams when it comes to EPR compliance.

FAQ about the EPR Compliance Service

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

An EPR Compliance Service helps online retailers meet their legal recycling and take back obligations. At ecosistant, we provide consulting, information, implementation, and ongoing monitoring so that you, as the party placing products on the market, remain compliant in all your target markets.

EPR stands for Extended Producer Responsibility. It is a principle under which retailers participate in the recycling of their packaging or products. Put simply, retailers pay for the waste they generate in the countries where that waste arises. This works through reporting the quantities of products or packaging sold in each country and paying the corresponding fees. Those fees finance recycling systems.

If you sell cross border in Europe and deliver to consumers in other countries, almost every country has different laws for the recycling of packaging or products that you need to follow. As a retailer, meaning the party placing products on the market, you are generally required to join a national take back system and pay recycling fees.

Because the laws differ from country to country, it is nearly impossible to stay compliant everywhere without expert support.

As the first digital advisor for recycling compliance across Europe, ecosistant changes that. With our EPR Compliance Services, you gain clarity. You can hand over your obligations to us completely or receive simple, tailored manuals for each country and implement them yourself.

The prices for our Self Service are listed clearly here. Pricing for our other compliance services depends on factors such as the number of countries you supply, the quantities you sell, and the number of waste streams involved. Send us a request and we will provide you with a non binding quote.

Recycling fees are explicitly not included in our services. If applicable, they are charged separately as part of the relevant obligations and their implementation.

Recycling fees and registration fees charged by take back systems or national waste registers are not included in our service fees. These costs are passed on to you exactly as they are.

As a general guideline for external annual costs:

  • Packaging waste: from about €50 to €150 per country per year as a minimum cost.
  • Electrical equipment or batteries: from about €500 per country per year as a minimum cost.

These amounts vary significantly depending on the country, the quantities involved, the specific products you sell, and the type of packaging used.

In some countries, additional one time costs may apply for notarial services and administrative fees needed to obtain required documents. In Spain, for example, you need a NIF number, which involves additional notary and registration fees.

Our services are designed for all types of companies. If you place packaging, electrical equipment, batteries, textiles, furniture, or other regulated products on the market, many countries impose EPR obligations that we can help you manage.

With Self Service, smaller B2C online retailers can manage their EPR compliance on their own using our easy to follow guidance. With the Premium Service, we handle the complete implementation and ongoing compliance for companies that want to stay focused on their core business.
